The top photo is of the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial, engineered
by Architect Helm Roberts of Lexington Kentucky.
The names of 1,103 soldiers are engraved in the granite plaza, placed so that on the anniversary
of each individuals death, the tip of the shadow strikes that persons name. This unique function provides an individual
memorial for each fallen soldier.
The MIA names are located to the South of the gnomon, where the shadow never strikes.
Also, the tip of the shadow strikes a small marker at 11:11 am on 11/11, Veteran's Day, taking
one minute to cross; this commemorates the moment of silence before each annual Veteran's ceremony.
To the right is a simple heliochronometer, a design from 2,000 years ago - made of
stainless and brass, this maquette displays the timeless design, actually appearing quite modern.
